CHAPTER SEVEN

Close friends and family were happy at the turn of events for Cyril, knowing what he had gone through in the past. His best friend, Joe, also based in Paris and who is a Lawyer by profession and his wife Josephine, had also been very supportive throughout their ordeal.

Joe soon came alone to see him at home after his daughter’s discharge from the hospital. “I am so happy she survived, at least you won’t feel so bad pressing for the compensation due to their negligence. It would be quite sizeable since she suffered some damage to her eyesight, which can be corrected with glasses. I have done all the preliminary investigations. When can I start the legal process?”

“Have you finished, Joe?”

“You seem not to have listened to all I said.”

“Look, I am not pressing for any compensation,” Cyril informed him.

“Why?” Joe was startled. “This is not like you!”

“That is just my decision.”

“You can’t leave that kind of good money to the hospital. Let them pay for their mistakes. They can’t cure common malaria that any roadside chemist in Africa can cure with a one dollar coin. They almost killed the little girl, sending her into a coma for several months, putting your family through hell, and then you let them go scot free? No, No, No,” he said angrily. “They also used her like a guinea pig in a laboratory to teach their medical students about tropical disease like malaria, for series of experiments without your approval thereby denying her the required treatment on time. This is a separate legal battle needing other compensation as well,” Joe explained. “I have two charges against that hospital, yet you want them to walk away free as if they did not commit any offence?”

“I repeat, I don’t need any form of compensation,” Cyril said.

“Are you serious?” Joe looked at his friend closely, but all he found in his eyes was sincerity and seriousness.

“Yes,” Cyril nodded; his mind was made up on the issue.

“Okay, if that is the way you feel, no problem” Joe agreed reluctantly. “But in case you change your mind, just give me a call. I will offer you free legal service as a friend.”

“Thanks, all the same,” Cyril smiled with appreciation, “but I don’t need it.”

“You are becoming difficult to understand,” Joe shook his head, and tossed another glance in his friend’s direction. “I mean, you can give the money to charity if you don’t need it.”

“I don’t want to discuss this issue again. Can we talk of something else?”

“Sure, but I can’t seem to take my mind off the issue, millions of dollars and you are…”

“That’s okay, how are your wife and kids?” Cyril tried to change the topic.

“Fine,” Joe responded. Then with a sly remark, “but the issue of the compensation is still…”

“Do you want a drink?” Cyril was firm. He had made a decision, and he was not turning back for anything in the world.

Joe read the relentless look in his friend’s eyes. “I’m fine. I don’t want to drink anything,” he stated, and then rose to his feet.
